Scot Lane from New World — Interview in December 2021

After many years of development, multiple shifts and adjustments of the game, how well it feels new world finally on live servers and with so many players?

Scot Lane: The development and operation of a MMOs are really hard, and yes, it's worthwhile. We are very impressed by the number of players and the reaction to New World (now €39.99). And almost two months after the start we still record high players. We look forward to expanding New World with this growing community in the coming years.

The initial success of New World was gigantic. However, the loss of players was very high in the following weeks. Did you expect it or were you surprised by both the beginning of the start and the drastic decline in game numbers?

Scot Lane: We have expired that the number of players would go back after the start, that's inevitable. Yes, we were surprised by the initial success. In order to meet the player sand rang, we almost doubled the number of worlds available. Now, after two months, we are satisfied with the number of players, and the players now have the session duration we expect — closer to two hours. At the beginning, the session was very high, which also increased the number of simultaneous players higher than expected.

‘New World’ developer admits it was wrong regarding changes

How satisfied are you with the start and the first month of New World in general? And is there something that would make you look different?

Scot Lane: Overall we are very satisfied with the response to New World. It is no secret that we had some problems with our start. If I could do something differently, then it would be to do something slower. We were arrested from the beginning because we almost doubled the number of worlds. We were so focused on reacting to problems quickly, that we have released some patches that have hedged the players more than used, and I apologize for that.

Bugs and Exploits

As with any new MMO also has to contend with bugs New World. How it feels when a developer team has fixed ten errors and later a dozen similar errors occur one day again?

Scot Lane: Yes, we did not really know how many doors are located behind the current door... Testing during an alpha phase is great, but when we are then started, the scope of the game is so grown that problems arise in game, not to mention the fact that the more players play more likely it is that they find problems. We still have a lot of work to do, but the team is determined to fix the problems!

There were a few cases in which the team has passed false information about the game. Regional server transfers are probably the biggest problem, but there was also confusion about automatic bans and the threat mechanics. It was alleged that threats 1: generate first After a few hours the post has been amended so that this is not the case. Here is an internal miscommunication in the team, or how can this happen?

Scot Lane: These are all examples of how we try to act too quickly. Our preference for quick action and the support of the players has led to errors. We have introduced mechanisms to improve this, and this will continue to do.

Many problems in the game were resolved with flick shoot. Exploit with the fire rod has been fixed by no longer allowed the players to equalize two equal weapons. But it was still possible if you switch the second weapon from the warehouse. The situation with the HTML codes in the chat has been fixed by blocking a certain part of the code to the post of images, which also did not work. Some players have lost their confidence in the developers, how do they want to fix the problem?

Scot Lane: When the players discovered the problem with the fire rod, we wanted to solve it quickly, as some players exploited it to other players to exploit. We started with a solution that we knew was temporary while we worked on the permanent correction of the cause of the problem. These are difficult problems, and sometimes a real solution takes days, and we want to help players at short notice while working on the right solution. I understand why the players are worried, and everything we can do as a team is to still listen to players to fix the problems as soon as we will learn from them, and to be transparent to our plan.

When the economy has been taken offline for the first time, players could not pay their city taxes, which led to a deterioration. When the second time happened, the problem was still in the game. Did the developers did not know anything about this problem or have they intentionally done anything about it?

Scot Lane: The trading stop is an evasive strategy that we wanted to apply only when we were forced, but that was necessary in these cases. We have granted the companies that saw associated problems in the city, compensation — the effect was unintentional and not intended.

There were a lot of things that have damaged the economy of a server, especially dupes. Some players have asked either after a server wipe or a new server to enable a fresh start without these problems. What do the developers think about this?

Scot Lane: We do not have plans for server deletions. We have data for every transaction and have thoroughly checked these to remove fake items and coins and punish all the malicious players using the exploits. At the moment we do not believe that there is still enough in the worlds to have an impact on the economy. Even if the percentage of the cheaters is low, you can have a big impact on the perception of the players. The team strives to create fair conditions for all players, most of which have no interest in exploits — they just want to play and enjoy New World just.

On the next page there is still Scot Lanes answers around the topics PVP, EVE and the future of New World.
